“My city, like all big cities, is very good at enticing you; it seems to offer many possibilities, but they never become a reality for the poor,” says 23-year-old Anjali from Gurugram who belongs to a broken family of four imbued with abject poverty grappling with the dual challenge of her younger brother’s school fees and the daily expenditures, all while trying to manage her mother’s medical bills.

“Each rejection letter felt searingly personal, an indictment of who I was as a person?” remembers Anjali who was stuck in the constant stream of “we regret to inform you” messages flooding in her email inbox . Determined to lead a fulfilling life, she embarked on a mission to improve herself, vowing to become the “ideal candidate.”

“Her eyes welled up.
