Born in a family of daily wage-workers, Sushma lives with 5 other members in a humble set-up of Bangalore. With a monthly yet fluctuating income of INR 10,000, the family had to take care of house rent, electricity and meeting basic needs. The COVID aftermath made it more difficult. “My family wanted me to get married since that would cut down cost in the middle of existing heavy expenses.”
Instead of marriage, Sushma chose to earn to bring back a stable income. “Tutoring small kids in my locality helped me start my small contributions to the family” marks Sushma, ‘while also delaying my wedding in this process.” The community volunteers in her locality who were extending support to low-income families, introduced Sushma to ANUDIP’s skill and career development centre near home. “Web Designing curriculum was in-depth here and it took me a while to be in sync.” Unfamiliar to this domain, Sushma underwent several mentoring sessions from her faculty to practice the needed. The technical course along with English classes at the Centre helped her hone the skills needed to clear her assessments.
While back at home, there was a constant tension since expenses were hard to sustain, “with my little monetary support from tutorials” claims Sushma. It took her precisely four months to be an expert designer. “On the 5 month, I could design a new website without prompts from my trainer” iterates Sushmita cheerfully. In the meantime, despite several reminders from friends and family, “on marriage being the only respite to cost-control”, Sushma remained resilient waiting patiently for her interview-results organized by the training centre.
“Rooman Technology it is” shouts-out the 23 year-old announcing her first job as a development associate with a promising salary of INR 47879/ monthly. “None in my family ever saw much remuneration in a single month” she claims on earning nearly 3x her the family income. “Friends and family who pushed me to get settled by marriage, now finds a new meaning of being settled.
