• I DREAM THINGS THAT NEVER WERE; AND I SAY, ‘WHY NOT?’”

STORY OF THODA GIREESH, ANDHRA PRADESH

“My father drives a private sumo on Tirupati hills and my mother is a homemaker running a sizeable household of five, in RayachotyKadapa District of Andhra Pradesh. When it became difficult to make ends meet, I started giving tutorials to the local children,” recalls Gireesh. 23 year-old Thota Gireesh has always seen his father painstaking— work as a cab driver doing day and night shifts to make more money. When his father returned back home exhausted, Gireesh heard stories about how he dropped young boys and girls doing corporate jobs and dreaming to see his sons sitting at the back seat of his cab, someday.

Gireesh and two of his brothers studied in local schools and struggled hard to complete education. Being a bright student, Gireesh got admission in a government engineering college and aspired to complete his masters in big business school. But due to low resources, he could not afford a luxury education in a management college, where most of his privileged friends got admission. His mother always had an incredible dignity, and respectfully turned down financial help from relatives who were willing to sponsor his son’s education. With an engineering degree and no funds for higher education, Gireesh started looking for employment opportunities to strengthen his resources. The next few days Gireesh had a major reality check when he faced back-to-back job rejections despite being an engineer. This was when Gireesh decided to take up market-aligned skills training from a local institute which he could manage. He got introduced to Anudip’s Skill & Career Development Centra at Tirupati which provided the basic backbone needed for rolling out all new-age career interventions to empower hitherto marginalized communities to access all possible benefits of 21st-century employment. Anudip foundation is one of the top NGOs in India enabling many youths to learn digital skills through their skill development training centers.

Gireesh enrolled for Diploma in Web Designing at Anudip from the centre and learnt HTML5, CSS, JAVA SCRIPT, and BOOTSTRAP. It was followed by assessments, certification and mock –interview sessions. He was not just trained in technical skills but Anudip helped him emphasize on communication proficiencies which was lacking. Post his training completion, Anudip helped him sit for multiple job-interviews in corporates. Today, Gireesh works as a Web Analyst in Capgemini, earning INR 31, 000 per month.

Recounting his struggle, he affirms, My father proudly speaks about my job at Capgemini, one of the largest multi-nationals to the passengers during his trips. Thanks to platforms like Anudip for helping less privileged youth like us set up the right goal, shape a smart career and afford the courage to dream big!
